Crash near Radium Hot Springs kills Alberta women

A 45-year-old Alberta women is dead after her vehicle lost control and swerved into the path of a southbound bus Sunday afternoon near Radium Hot Springs.

East Kootenay Traffic Services and Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle accident at approximately 4 p.m. on Highway 93/95 near Radium.

The northbound vehicle, driven by the Alberta women, lost control and swerved into the path of the southbound bus.

The driver of the car was transported to Invermere hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Sparwood man charged with possessing child pornography

Following an extensive investigation, the Elk Valley RCMP executed a search warrant on a Sparwood residence.

The search resulted in the seizure of a large amount of computer equipment and electronic storage devices.

As a result of the investigation and the subsequent search, a 21-year old Sparwood resident was taken into custody and has been charged with possessing child pornography.

The Elk Valley RCMP worked closely with investigators from the RCMP Child Exploitation Unit from Vancouver over the past couple of months leading up to this search.

Top cop in Merritt charged with allegedly taking cocaine

RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela announced during press conference Wednesday afternoon in Chilliwack that a top cop has been charged after allegedly taking -- and using -- cocaine from a police exhibit.

Staff-Sgt. Stuart Seib, the commander of the Merritt RCMP detachment and an 18-year veteran of the force, was charged Wednesday.

Sekela, RCMP southeast district officer chief superintendent, said the force learned of the alleged theft on Friday, Jan. 6.

Six senior officers are investigating the incident.

Two male suspects found responsible for bus vandalism in Salmo

Salmo RCMP identified two males, ages 17 and 19, as being responsible for vandalism to a school bus parked at the Salmo High School on New Year's Day.

The two suspects broke into a locked school bus located at the Salmo High School, through the roof of the bus and vandalized the vehicle, tossing garbage around the bus and breaking a window.

Surveillance video, help from witnesses and evidence seized at the scene have brought a successful conclusion to this file.

Early morning gas raid targets Salmo resident

In the early hours of Wednesday, RCMP report unknown suspects stole a jerry can and then syphoned gas from a vehicle located at that same residence in the 500 block of Tamarac Crescent in Salmo.

It appears as though two individuals may have been involved, both possibly travelled to the corner of Cady road and Tamarac Crescent.

The incident comes on the heels of a report by Salmo RCMP that between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day unknown suspects broke into a locked school bus located at the Salmo High School and vandalized the vehicle.

Cranbrook RCMP seek public assistance for missing man

Cranbrook RCMP are again seeking the public’s help in locating David Cox, a 27 year old male who has been missing from Cranbrook since April, 2011.

The police ask that anyone with information about Cox or his whereabouts, to please call their local police office no matter how minor or insignificant you believe the information may be.

Second life, although brief, for B.C.'s drunk driving law

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled public safety temporarily trumps charter rights when it comes to provincial drunk driving laws.

Justice Jon Sigurdson ruled earlier this month that the law around immediate roadside prohibitions, also known as the IRPs, for those who blow over .08 on a screening device was unconstitutional.

But on Friday, Sigurdson ruled that his declaration would be delayed until June 30, 2012.

"Accordingly, I have concluded that an immediate declaration of invalidity of part of the IRP regime may pose a danger to the public."

Workers to see less in pay cheque during 2012

Increases to employment insurance and Canada Pension Plan deductions mean both employers and employees will be taking a hit in the pocketbook starting Sunday, Jan. 1.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its annual New Year Tax Changes calculations, which show the two groups combined will pay an extra $306 in payroll taxes in 2012.

The EI rate rises from 1.78 per cent to 1.83 per cent for employees, who will also see maximum insurable earnings rise from $44,200 to $45,900, the federation says.

Letter: Smart meter and electromagnetic hypersensitivity

I have been diagnosed as Electromagnetic Hypersensitive (EHS).

Two years ago I had never heard of the sensitivity. Recent experiences with increasingly painful headaches and severe itching caused me to look for the cause.

After a small amount of research the conditions appeared to be caused by radio frequencies; within two days of getting rid of my cell phone and changing my computer system to no longer use wifi the symptoms were significantly less.

Government increases options for natural health products

Parliamentary Secretary of Health Colin Carrie today announced changes to the classification of 10 naturally sourced ingredients making them eligible for inclusion in natural health products.

The 10 ingredients include minerals, oils and salts which are used in traditional medicine and in Western natural health product formulations to maintain and improve health. These ingredients had previously been restricted to products available by prescription.

Due to numerous weaknesses in the management of its environmental enforcement program, Environment Canada does not know how much its enforcement activities contribute to regulatory compliance and minimize environmental damage, says Scott Vaughan, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, in his report tabled Wednesday in Parliament.

The audit looked at the Department’s enforcement of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) and regulations.

Progress continues on the BC Jobs Plan with the announcement of a Mines Act permit for the Barkerville Gold Mine, outside of Wells.

The mine, set to begin construction as early as next year, will provide 30 direct jobs at Bonanza Ledge and a further 40 jobs at the QR Mine once it becomes fully operational.

As part of the BC Jobs Plan, announced earlier this year by Premier Christy Clark, the province expects to see eight brand new mines and another nine mining expansions operational in British Columbia by 2015.

20-year-old Selkirk College student dies in ski ramp mishap

In the early hours of Nov. 25, a 20-year old male student from Selkirk College was using a temporary ski ramp that he and a friend had constructed for their own use.

The young male, while using the ramp, fell and struck his head — he was not wearing a helmet.

Although he was injured by the incident, the young male did not seek medical attention. Later that morning the male returned to his home, but a few hours later was found in medical distress and transported to the local hospital.

Selkirk looks to keep Selkirk aviation program viable

Selkirk College is submitting a proposal to Western Economic Diversification for capital renewal funding for equipment at the West Kootenay Regional Airport in Castlegar.

The regional innovation chair, Terri MacDonald, asked the RDCK board for a letter of support for the funding of two simulators, two twin-engine planes and storage/maintenance hangar.

Acquiring the state-of-the-art twin-engine planes would allow the second-year students to remain in Castlegar for the second year of training in the Selkirk aviation program.

Avalanche risk and accidents close B.C. highways

Heavy snow, accidents and the risk of avalanches are causing problems on several main highways in B.C., including the Trans-Canada in the Fraser Canyon and the Coquihalla, the CBC reports.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed shortly after 6 a.m. PT Wednesday between Boston Bar and Yale because of the high avalanche risk and a vehicle accident.

It is not yet clear when the route will be re-opened and Boston Bar elementary/secondary school has been closed for the day because teachers will not be able to reach the school.

Two dead after crash near Sparwood

Two people are dead after a crash between an SUV and a semi truck on Highway 3 east of Sparwood, on Monday morning.

Police say the SUV lost control and drove into the side of the oncoming tractor trailer, then wound up partially submerged in Michel Creek. Both occupants of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said driving and weather conditions in the area were very poor at the time of the crash, with heavy snowfall and accumulation.

Highway 3 was closed for most of the day and reopened late Monday afternoon.

BC Coroners Service confirms death of co-pilot

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the death of the co-pilot of the airplane that crashed in Richmond on Oct. 27, 2011.

The deceased is Matthew Robic, aged 26, who resided in Mission. He was the co-pilot of the Northern Thunderbird Air aircraft that crashed while attempting to return to Vancouver International Airport after leaving for a flight to Kelowna.

Robic was one of 11 persons transported to hospital after the crash that occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Oct. 27. He remained in hospital since the time of the crash.

Robert W. Paulson was named the new Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, effective Nov. 21.

Paulson succeeds Commissioner William J.S. Elliott, who has been appointed as Special Representative of INTERPOL to the United Nations.

Paulson has had a distinguished 25-year career with the RCMP, joining in 1986 as a Constable. He has held progressively senior positions within the Force, most recently as Deputy Commissioner, Federal Policing.

B.C. expands immunizations for children

Starting Jan. 1, 2012, three new vaccines will be added to the British Columbia childhood immunization schedule.

The Province is expanding its current childhood immunization program to include rotavirus vaccine, a varicella (chickenpox) booster, and hepatitis A vaccine for Aboriginal children, both on- and off-reserve.

Total purchase costs for these vaccines will be approximately $3.1 million per year.

New Revelstoke Secondary hub for the community

Today’s official opening of the new Revelstoke Secondary school was a celebration for the whole community, as the new school also hosts a Neighbourhood Learning Centre offering programs and services for people of all ages and interests.

Revelstoke Secondary was built for $39.9 million and created 255 jobs for the area. This new grades 8-12 school has a capacity of 500 students.

An Angus Reid poll released Wednesday revealed the NDP had opened up a nine-point lead over the Liberals, with 40 per cent of respondents saying they would vote NDP in the next election, compared to the 31 per cent who said they would vote Liberal.

The figures represent a 12 point drop for Clark’s Liberals, a two point increase for the Dix’s NDP, and an 13 per cent increase (to 18 per cent) for John Cummins’ Conservatives when compared to a similar Angus Reid poll in March.

Bank of Canada maintains overnight rate target at one per cent

The Bank of Canada announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at one per cent.

The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1 1/4 per cent and the deposit rate is 3/4 per cent.

The global economy has slowed markedly as several downside risks to the projection outlined in the Bank’s July Monetary Policy Report (MPR) have been realized.

Financial market volatility has increased and there has been a generalized retrenchment from risk-taking across global markets.

Land Act changes improve protection of sled dogs

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is now requiring any sled dog company receiving a Crown land tenure to obtain an annual inspection of its sled dogs.

This is a key recommendation of the Sled Dog Task Force report.

The requirement of an annual inspection will be added to tenures issued under the provincial Land Act for future sled dog owners and operators.

B.C. Hydro looks to trim hundreds of jobs

B.C. Hydro announced the chopping of 300 jobs this week as part of a three-year plan to cut 700 jobs.

The company announced the downsizing in the wake of a scathing government-ordered review that found B.C. Hydro bloated by up to 1,200 surplus staffers.

In order to slow down Hydro rate increases, the review called for $300 million in savings over three years, including $175 million in staffing costs.

In an October 12 interview on Global Television, the president of the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA), Robert Hornung stated that "wind turbine sound…can have potentially indirect health impacts".

CanWEA has consistently claimed that there is no direct link to health effects from wind turbines. That official position statement is now different.

New public guardian and trustee appointed

Catherine Romanko has been appointed public guardian and trustee of British Columbia.

The appointment was effective Oct. 10 for a six-year term. Romanko succeeds Jay Chalke, who served for 11 years.

Fire protection services in the RDCK

The Regional District of Central Kootenay will sign a five-year agreement, with a commencement date of Jan. 1, 2012, with the Lower Kootenay Indian Band, for the provision of fire protection services for portions of Electoral Area B.

The RDCK also is expected to enter into a similar agreement with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, for the provision of fire protection services to a portion of Electoral Area J and Electoral Area G.

Break, enter and theft in Salmo

On Sunday, Oct. 9 at approximately 9 a.m., a report of a residential break and enter on Second Street in Salmo was received.

Salmo RCMP responded and requested the assistance of the Nelson Rural RCMP, Forensic Identification Section and the Police Dog Service unit.

While securing the residence for evidence examination, another report was received that three males had just attempted to break into a garage on Davies Avenue in Salmo.

B.C. smokers lit up phone lines calling 8-1-1 this week to get help quitting.

A total of 7,107 nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) orders were taken during the first week of the Province’s smoking cessation program coming into effect Friday, Sept. 30.

The vast majority of smokers who called HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 to register for the program opted to pick up their order at a pharmacy rather than get their order mailed to the home address.

A Jaffray man is facing two charges after his 10-year-old stepson accidentally shot and killed another boy while showing off his stepfather's shotgun, the CBC reports.

George Phillips, 51, of Jaffray has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless storage of a firearm, according to RCMP. Phillips will make his first court appearance in Cranbrook Nov. 9.

During the course of these investigations, a large amount of money has been located. This money is suspected to have been obtained from an (as yet) un-reported theft.

An Alberta court date for accused child abductor Randall Hopley has been put off until Dec. 6.

Hopley is currently facing a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he can stand trial for the bizarre kidnapping of three-year-old Kienan Hebert.

Hopley also faces charges for stealing goods and breaking into a cabin in the Crowsnest Lake, Alta., area in 2010. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on these matters, but that date was moved to December.

BC Liquor Stores customers and staff are making a difference in the Horn of Africa by donating $323,902 to help support Red Cross relief efforts in Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Uganda.

Donations are matched by the Government of Canada, doubling the contribution.

BC Liquor Stores collected the donations between Friday, Aug. 5 and Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011 at their 197 locations. The funds raised have been added to the Canadian Red Cross Horn of Africa Relief Fund.

Air Canada strike unlikely as airline, flight attendants reach tentative deal

Less than 12 hours before Air Canada’s 6,800 flight attendants were threatening to strike, they reached a tentative deal.

The details of the agreement won’t be released until after it’s ratified.

None of the airline’s mainline flights were affected. Some Jazz flights that were rescheduled to accommodate the possible strike will be back on regular schedule by Thursday.

The flight attendants were threatening to strike at 9 p.m. Vancouver time Tuesday.

Missing helicopter pilot found dead near Coquihalla Mountain

A helicopter pilot who went missing hear Hope last Friday has been found dead.

The Aerospatiale A350 helicopter piloted by Rod Phillipson was spotted Tuesday by a Wildcat Helicopters Kelowna pilot near Coquihalla Mountain.

Canadian Forces search and rescue technicians were brought to the scene, and found Phillipson without vital signs.

Phillipson, 61, is believed to have taken off from Langley about 6:30 p.m. Friday en route to a Kelowna residence.

An A Star helicopter with just the pilot on board left the Langley airport around 6:30 p.m. Friday, said a statement from the joint rescue co-ordination centre in Victoria.

What is being characterized as an aftershock from last week's earthquake hit northwestern Vancouver Island early Thursday morning, centred in almost the same area as the 6.3 magnitude earthquake last week.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the 4.0 magnitude quake occurred at 4 a.m., but at 25 kilometres below the Earth's crust, it was not strong enough to cause a tsunami or any major damage.

BC Coroners Service requests help to identify man

The BC Coroners Service and West Vancouver Police are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a male whose remains were discovered in the water near the shore of Burrard Inlet not far from Lighthouse Park.

His body was found Sept. 1, 2011, and he is believed to have died within a very few days of his discovery.

The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee is hosting an Aquatic Invasive Species Workshop on Friday, Sept. 16 at the MIR Centre, Selkirk College, in Castlegar.

This workshop will include information on aquatic invasive species in our region and at our borders, how to identify, monitor and report them, and how to reduce their spread.

The workshop will include indoor presentations as well as outdoor demonstrations and hands-on activities.

High flyer grounded by police

A Kelowna resident has had his vehicle impounded after he was clocked doing three times the posted speed limit across the Bennett Bridge on Friday night.

At 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 9, a police officer observed a green Ford Mustang accelerating in an aggressive manner as it turned from Abbott St. onto the bridge approach.

The officer followed the vehicle and, when the radar speed reading device showed the vehicle was beyond the posted speed limit, turned on the emergency equipment (lights, siren).

The bike has a serial number but a description will be required to claim the bike.

Recycling changes to the blue bag program

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has changed which types of plastics can be put in the blue bags – they now accept food grade plastics with a one to seven in the mobius loop.

Also, plastic grocery bags can now be put into blue bags.

Numbers don’t improve on the employment front in Kootenays

The number of people employed in the Kootenay regions dropped by over 400 people in August, compared to one year ago, according to Statistics Canada.

As well, the unemployment rate rose nearly one per cent to 8.6 per cent, but the jobless numbers dropped one point, from 10.5 to 9.5.

According to Statistics Canada, job gains came in the service sector, with some losses in retail wholesale trade.

City's water conservation measures still in effect

Water conservation measures are still in effect for Nelson.

Residents at odd-numbered addresses can water on odd-numbered calendar days, and residents at even-numbered addresses can water on even-numbered calendar days.

Watering and car washing is only permitted between the hours of 6-10 am and 6-10 pm (on alternating days).

Automatic sprinklers are only permitted between the hours of 10 pm to 6 am (on alternating days).

Vancouver Island earthquake felt in Lower Mainland

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake just occurred off Vancouver Island Friday afternoon, with the effects felt in the Lower Mainland.

Simon Fraser University geologist Brent Ward said the quake likely originated from stress built up due to the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate subducting under the North American plate.
