Along the Powder Highway: What's a Whiteway?

Along the Powder Highway, located between the two small communities of Invermere (near Panorama Mountain Resort) and Windermere, is Lake Windermere.

During the winter months while the lake is frozen the ‘Whiteway’ is used to travel between these communities.

The Whiteway is a 15km-groomed track that runs all the way around the lake on the ice. There are actually two loops, a large and a small one that form a figure eight, allowing users to make appropriate choices.

With well-groomed tracks for classic cross-country skiing, skate skiing and ice-skating, the Whiteway offers family recreation adventures for all ages and abilities right in the heart of the two communities — promoting healthful activity!

Since ice fishing is so popular on Lake Windermere, ample space will be left for the usual ice fishing huts which dot the lake every winter and provide so much enjoyment for enthusiasts.

There are three official entry points onto the Whiteway; the Kinsmen Beach in Invermere, the Invermere Bay Condos and Windermere Beach.

Those using the facility are asked to pay the day-use fee of $5, which goes toward promotion and maintenance of the trails (& this year’s purchase of a zamboni to clear the ice-skating, hockey and curling surfaces).
