High flyer grounded by police

A Kelowna resident has had his vehicle impounded after he was clocked doing three times the posted speed limit across the Bennett Bridge on Friday night.

At 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 9, a police officer observed a green Ford Mustang  accelerating in an aggressive manner as it turned from Abbott St. onto the bridge approach.

The officer followed the vehicle and, when the radar speed reading device showed the vehicle was beyond the posted speed limit, turned on the emergency equipment (lights, siren).

The Mustang continued to speed away from the officer, who noted a top speed of 182 kilometres per hour on the radar unit.

The vehicle then turned off at the Campbell Rd. interchange and slowed as the police officer caught up to  it and pulled the Mustang over.

In conversation with the 40-year-old male driver, the officer noted the odor of liquor on the driver's breath and so subjected the driver to two separate Roadside Alcohol Screening Device tests, both of which showed a "fail."

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the driver was served an Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition for 90 days and a $483 Violation Ticket for Excessive Speeding.

The reckless nature of the driving behavior exhibited could have easily resulted in tragedy for the driver, and other motorists.
