RCMP ask the public to remain vigilant as Armstrong homicide investigation continues

The RCMP are asking the public to remain vigilant as the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Taylor Van Diest on Oct. 31 in Armstrong — four hours northwest of Nelson — continues.

While the investigation remains active and on-going, with a large number of personnel dedicated to this priority investigation, developments today have enforced the need to re-issue a public request for extra vigilance.

“On Wednesday, November 9th, the Armstrong RCMP Detachment received a letter from an individual who claims to be responsible for Taylor's death and suggests possible further violence against women.  At this point in time we will not speculate whether the letter is authentic, though we are working to determine who may have sent it. Our primary concern remains the safety of the public. We would hope that the person or persons responsible share our concern” stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

As such, the RCMP is taking the appropriate precautionary step of advising the public of the threatening nature of the letter.

“We are asking that the general public remain vigilant and continue to take extra personal safety precautions in our communities, particularly in the Central and North Okanagan,” said Cpl Moskaluk.

“We recommend traveling in a group; or asking parents or friends for a ride. Travel areas of the community that have good visibility. Let family or friends know where you are going and when you expect to arrive. If you have a cell phone carry it. Report any suspicious activity right away.”

Police are asking that anyone with information to please come forward and speak with them. Call the RCMP or if you wish to remain anonymous contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
