Stepfather charged after 10-year-old kills teen
A Jaffray man is facing two charges after his 10-year-old stepson accidentally shot and killed another boy while showing off his stepfather's shotgun, the CBC reports.
George Phillips, 51, of Jaffray has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless storage of a firearm, according to RCMP. Phillips will make his first court appearance in Cranbrook Nov. 9.
No charges will be laid against the 10-year-old boy. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, children under the age of 12 are not charged with criminal acts.
RCMP said the boy was one of six children and teens hanging out at a house in the Kootenay region of southeastern B.C., on June 16.
The child was showing off his stepfather's shotgun when it accidentally fired, hitting Michael Voth, 17, of Fernie, who was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Chris Faulkner.
