Double stuck, and charged with theft; and, who hurt Rusty?

On September 12, 2019, officers from the local RCMP detachment tracked down a truck reported as stolen from the Red Mountain Ski Resort.  The truck was owned by a contracting company working in the area, and was equipped with GPS – which provided live updates on the truck’s location and made finding the stolen vehicle much easier.

When they found it, down one of the Black Jack ski trails, the 43-year-old Rossland man suspected of taking the truck was parked nearby in his own truck.   It appeared to the RCMP that the man had originally driven his own truck down the ski trail and got it stuck.  Having tried and failed to get a tow truck to pull his own truck out in a timely way, he then took the contractor’s truck and tried to use it to recover his truck – but got the contractor’s truck stuck too.  A tow truck was eventually located and used to free both of the stuck trucks. Trail’s top RCMP officer indicated that the operation took most of the day.

The man has been charged with Theft of a  Motor Vehicle and will make a first appearance in Provincial Court in Rossland on November 7, 2019.

In a different incident, Rossland’s popular downtown sculpture Rusty the Horse was knocked over and damaged last weekend by a person or persons unknown (so far).  Anyone with information about this act should report it to the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP at 250-364-2566 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) if you wish to remain anonymous.
