Six RCMP officers of the Trail and Greater District RCMP have again signed up to conduct patrols over the 2020 / 2021 winter season up at RED Mountain Ski Resort, according to Trail RCMP top cop Mike Wicentowich.

“The volunteer ski patrol program has been active for many years in the area and has been a successful tool to engage the public while having some fun,” Wicentowich said. “The police officers are responsible for conducting a minimum of four patrols this season on their regular days off shift. They are operational while patrolling and respond to any incidents reported to them while at the resort. The officers thoroughly enjoy the duty and get a chance to connect with the other skiing enthusiasts on the mountain. It has been a very positive experience for the officers, the public and RED Mountain Resort.”

He said this year patrols have proven to be particularly important when ensuring compliance with the BC Emergency Program Act.

“As an example, Trail RCMP has recently conducted an investigation into a local resident for refusing to wear a mask while on resort property that resulted in a $230 fine issued,” Wicentowich said. “RCMP officers will continue to be vigilant and remind guests to protect themselves and others by wearing masks and socially distancing while at the ski hill. Trail RCMP want to ensure a high rate of compliance so everyone can continue to enjoy skiing throughout the winter.”

He also applauded locals for their efforts to flatten the Covid curve.

“Trail RCMP has been very impressed with the high rate of compliance and the dedication of the RED Mountain Resort staff in ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

“Trail RCMP would like to remind the public that skiing on RED Mountain Resort is closed to the public overnight between 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. Trail RCMP has received reports about people skiing outside of operational hours and coming into conflict with staff. Trail RCMP may be responding to resolve such incident in the future.”
