Kaslo's Haegedorn helps Kootenay gain split against Cougars Sunday in Prince George

A goal by Kathryn Haegedorn of Kaslo turned out to be the winner giving the Kootenay Wildcats a 3-2 victory over the Cougars and a split in B.C. Female Hockey League doubleheader action Sunday in Prince George.

Haegedorn’s maker came with six minutes remaining in the contest, increasing the margin to 3-1 before the Cougars scored in the final minute to make the game close.

Saturday, Prince George escaped with a 3-2 win over the Wildcats.

Through 40 minutes Sunday the teams could not solve their respective opposing goalies.

However, Haegedorn broke the ice with a tally five minutes into the final frame to give Kootenay a 1-0 lead.

Prince George tied the game before Holly Nikirk of Invermere restored the lead for Kootenay.

Saturday, a power play goal by Linda Jensen snapped a 2-2 tie sparking the Cougars to the one-goal victory over Kootenay.

Twice Kootenay took one-goal leads only to see Prince George rally to tie.

Christina Bonacci of Trail opened the scoring for Kootenay in the first period.

Kate Yuris, also from Trail, scored in the second for the Cats.

Morgan Flynn of Castlegar was in goal for both games.

The win was especially important to Kootenay, which has fallen into the basement of  the Female Hockey League.

The 4-14-2 Cats trail the Cougars by one point and third-place Vancouver Fusion by three points heading action March 3-4 in Nelson.

The opposition just happens to be the Fusion.

Game times are 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at the NDCC Arena.
