A 24-year-old man is facing numerous charges, including Assaulting a Police Officer, following an altercation with police last week Grand Forks RCMP said in a media release Tuesday.

The arrest was made after police responded to a report of a break and enter in progress to a residence in the 7500 block of 6th Street in Grand Forks Saturday at 9:15 a.m.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after the suspect had escaped custody after a bike helmet and back pack was stolen from a youth at another nearby business.

“Upon arrival at the scene (Saturday), it was determined that this was the same male from the previous day and that he was inside the residence,” the RCMP release said.

“Another altercation ensued with police and the male was taken into custody.”

“Two police officers received minor injuries during the altercation,” the release added.

The trail of crime began (Friday) September 22, at approximately 2:30 p.m., when RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a business in the 1600 block of Central Ave.

Police located the suspect a short distance away.

However, during the altercation ensued and the male escaped custody. Police Dog Services were called in to assist in the search for the male, but he was not located.

The following day, RCMP got their man during the break and enter at the Grand Forks residence in the 7500 block of 6th Street.

Police said the man, who is not a resident of Grand Forks, is now facing charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Possession of Stolen Property, Break and Enter, Attempt Arson and Breach of Conditions.

Police said the male has been remanded in custody to a court date in the future.

“As a result of the investigation, several pieces of stolen property were recovered and are in the process of being returned to the proper owners,” police said.
