Museum honours Trail's wartime heritage

May 2013 marks the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Atlantic, the longest and one of the most critical battles of the Second World War.
From Sept. 3, 1939 to May 8, 1945, tens of thousands of Canadian men and women, on hundreds of ships and airplanes, bravely faced the cold and dangerous waters of the North Atlantic in order to ensure critical supplies reached our troops and allies in Europe. The Battle of the Atlantic’s pinnacle came in 1943, and it is in this month that the anniversary is traditionally observed.
A Canadian ship named in the honour of the community of Trail, the H.M.C.S. Trail, was in service during this same time period. To honour this event, the Trail Historical Society has collected some pieces from the H.M.C.S. Trail and displayed them at the Royal Canadian Legion in Trail.
“It is an honour to display these rare artifacts in such an appropriate venue,” says Sarah Benson, Director, Trail Museum and Archives. “Commemorating the H.M.C.S. Trail’s involvement in the Battle of the Atlantic serves to further emphasize Trail’s already strong and unique association with the events of World War Two.”
