An Alberta man and a local woman are facing charges after being pulled over by BC Highway Patrol near Castlegar, according to RCMP Cpl. Mike Halskov.

“On June 3, an officer with BC Highway Patrol based in Nelson conducted a vehicle stop on Hwy 3 near the Bombi Summit (about 22 km southeast of Castlegar).

“Upon speaking with the vehicle’s two occupants, the officer formed grounds to believe they were in possession of firearms and arrested both people, a man in his late thirties from Alberta and a woman in her twenties from the local area.

“The officer conducted a search of the vehicle and found the following:

  • Loaded .45 calibre Smith & Wesson pistol;
  • Loaded Kodiak WK180-C rifle (similar to AR-15);
  • Ammunition for both firearms;
  • Illegally modified magazines for the rifle;
  • Significant quantities of drugs, believed to consist of Fentanyl, Cocaine and Methamphetamine consistent with trafficking; and
  • Large amount of Canadian currency.

“The individuals were taken before a Justice of the Peace and were released on conditions. Both are now facing potential criminal charges of possessing firearms in a motor vehicle and possession of controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, among others, and will be required to attend Court in Nelson on June 22, 2021.

“BC Highway Patrol officers are highly trained police officers with wide-ranging investigative skill sets. Their office is their patrol vehicle and the highways they patrol which criss-cross the province. Their work can be challenging and there is an expectation that they can investigate anything they encounter during their patrols, some of which are in remote areas of BC. Above all, these officers are far more than ticket writers and the motoring public can feel safe knowing that BC Highway Patrol officers are working hard to make our highways safer together.

“If you see any suspicious activity, you are encouraged to contact your local police, Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 9-1-1 in an emergency.”
