On April 13, at just before 2 p.m., there was a hazardous materials spill at the Teck Trail Operations facility, according to Richard Deane, manager, Commercial Services and Public Affairs

“It was a short duration discharge of water containing metals at our operation this afternoon,” Deane said. “It is believed to be the result of a break in a line that carries water from an area containing historic landfills to our on-site water treatment facility.”

Deane said the discharge lasted for about 15 to 20 minutes, has now been stopped and is now contained.

“It occurred along south bank of Stoney Creek,” he said, adding a quantity of the water from the break in the line may have entered the creek. “All the appropriate regulatory authorities are aware of the event, including the Ministry of Environment and Emergency Management BC.

“There is no human health risk as a result of this incident,” he said. “Environmental monitoring is being undertaken, that will allow for an assessment of the potential environmental impact. We take incidents of this nature very seriously.”
