A city street sweeper mysteriously burst into flames yesterday, according to a press release issued by RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“On Nov. 5, at 9:58 a.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP assisted Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Department after a City of Trail street sweeper caught on fire while travelling on Hwy 22 toward Rossland (Rossland Hill),” Wicentowich said. “The street sweeper was brand new and noted to be in working order by the operator just before the fire started.

“The operator saw smoke coming from the centre console and pulled over immediately. The fire quickly spread to the cab of the sweeper and engulfed the vehicle. The driver escaped unharmed. Part of the bank on the side of the road caught fire as well. The sweeper and bank were extinguished by KBRFD.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown.”

The City of Trail, in a related press release, indicated the sweeper will not be put back into immediate use.

“At initial inspection, it has been determined that the unit is permanently damaged,” the press release said. “Due to this incident, some neighbourhoods may experience delays in leaf/foliage street sweeping until the unit can be temporarily or permanently replaced.”
