Vandals who created a stunning mess on Columbia Avenue Saturday may have unwittingly created a local community-building exercise in the process.

Councillor Kevin Chernoff said the real story, from his perspective, was not the horrific mess made by the newspapers, which were thrown off the Highway 3 overpass onto Columbia Avenue, but rather how many residents pulled over and pitched in during the clean up.

“There were probably 15 people who helped out over the course of about half-an-hour – and more would’ve been willing to help,” he said. “It really was great.”

Emcon reported roughly 400 pounds of newspaper scattered along the street.

Chernoff said at least two concerned residents also stopped to give him the name of someone suspected of making the mess, saying this person allegedly bragged about the incident on Facebook.

Chernoff also said this information was forwarded to local RCMP, but Sgt. Laurel Mathew told The Source today that police have not yet determined who committed the act of vadalism or why, nor have they ascertained where the newspapers came from in the first place.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the local RCMP detachment at 250-365-7721.
