Trail man charged in string of auto vandalisms

Since April 28 of this year, Trail has been inundated with a rash of vandalism to vehicles that involved a chemical being sprayed on them that stripped the paint. The areas hit included Glenmerry along with East and West Trail. In the early hours of August 13, a General Duty member noted a suspicious person on Topping Street in West Trail.
The man, now identified as Christopher Shane Yorke, of Trail, appeared in Grand Forks Provincial Court today and plead guilty to one count of mischief over $5,000 and one count of disguising his face with intent to commit an offence. He was released on a Recognizance with numerous conditions and the matter was set over to October 7 in Rossland Provincial Court for a pre-sentence report.
Subsequent investigation resulted in the 40 year old Trail resident being arrested for mischief in relation to the damage to vehicles that had been occurring since April. A large syringe containing an unknown liquid, believed to be corrosive, was seized from him. He was subsequently remanded in custody and will be appearing in court in Grand Forks on August 17 charged with 4 counts of mischief plus wearing a disguise while committing a criminal offence. There have been a total of 84 vehicles damaged with a corrosive liquid that were reported to police – several more than once. The total dollar amount of the damage is not known at this time. An enormous amount of person hours that involved every General Duty member of the detachment along with the Crime Reduction Unit and regional General Investigation Section was devoted to apprehending this individual. The 5 charges the accused is currently facing stem from the early hours of August 13, when 4 vehicles were targeted. The investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.
