B.C. Sports Hall stops in Nelson

The B.C. Sports Hall of Fame brought a taste of Kootenay sports history to Nelson Tuesday.
The provincial sport body was in the Heritage City showing off some of the greats in the sport from right here in the Kootenays.
There was Jack Kilpatrick’s hockey gold medal from when he played with the Wembley Lions at the 1936 Olympics; pictures of Seth Martin during the Trail Smokies’ run to the 1961 World Championship; gloves worn by Olympic gold medalist Nancy Greene; Frenchy D’Amour’s 1948 Canadian Curling championship rink and Nelson’s own Danny Gare’s induction document into the B.C. Sports Hall.
There were also a few medals, including the bronze medal won by sprinter Harry Jerome at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
The tour, organized by Bill McDonnell, started Tuesday with the Hero In You program that made stops at Trafalgar Middle School and St. Joseph’s Elementary.
Former Trail Smoke Eater great of the World Champion 1961 Smokies, Norm Lenardon of the Silver City was present to talk to the students.
The display moved to the NDCC Arena concourse prior to Tuesday’s KIJHL game between Nelson and Castlegar.
Wednesday the Hall of Fame will be at the NDCC Arena from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. From 10 a.m. to around 1 p.m., NHL great Gerry Cheevers will be on hand to sign autographs. Cheevers is in Nelson as part of the Colas Cup.
The Hall display will then move to the Prestige Inn for the Colas Cup hockey tournament banquet.
