Explosion in Fairview park perplexes police

An explosion in Queen Elizabeth Park Saturday night has the city’s police force puzzled and reaching out to the community for answers.
Nelson City Police are still investigating the source of the blast around 10 p.m. Saturday night that destroyed a plastic bag dispenser, a stainless steel box and the plywood mounting hardware.
“The blast was significant and did a lot of damage,” said NPD Sgt. Pat Severyn. “(We) are extremely concerned with this type of occurrence as the outcome from using any explosive devices within the city poses all sorts of dangerous outcomes.”
He said the device used in the explosion is still undetermined but all evidence located at the scene will be sent for analysis.
According to a witness there was a large explosion heard in the Fairview park. Sgt. Severyn said police were not made aware of the explosion until late Sunday morning.

Break and enter, with a snow plow
A thief used a stolen snow plow vehicle to smash out the rear door of a service station to break inside and steal valuable computer equipment Friday morning.
After receiving an alarm call at 5:20 a.m., NPD officers arrived at the Husky Service Station where they found the rear entrance of the building smashed out.
“The suspect was only in the store for a short time but was able to steal a number of pieces of valuable computer equipment,” said Sgt. Severyn.
The exact value of the computers has not been established.
Police were able to recover a stolen snow plow at another location in the city. The unknown suspect forced the lock on the vehicle door and then “compromised” the ignition on the truck and stole it.
Police are now collecting suspect information and descriptions from the video surveillance inside the store in their ongoing investigation of the incident.
