More changes in newspaper industry, Kamloops Daily closes press

There are more changes coming in the newspaper industry.
Eight months after selling off the Nelson Daily News and Prince Rupert Daily News to Victoria based Black Press, which immediately closed its door, parent company Glacier Media Group had decided to cease operations of both the press and mailroom at the Kamloops Daily News within the next 60 days effective Monday, February 21.
Glacier has entered into a contractual obligation with Black Press to print and collate our publications in their plant in Vernon for the Daily News and the Kamloops Review.
“These moves will utilize unused capacity at these plants and will allow significant savings for The Daily News operations,” Kamloops Daily News publisher Tim Shoults said in a written release that appeared on the CEP Local 2000 website.
CEP Local 2000 represents the seven full-time staff and 24 part-time staff in the press and mailroom operations of the Daily News.
The cuts represent a total of 19.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions that will be lost.
“It should be clear that we do not take these decisions lightly,” Shoults added.
“We have worked hard to create a strong business in the interest of our employees, our readers, our clients and our shareholders.
“It is with sorrow and sincere concern for our staff that we have reached these difficult decisions. We recognize the challenges that these decisions will provide to the individuals directly affected and their families, and extend our sincere thanks to them for their years of service.”
In July 2010, the Nelson Daily News, formerly owned by Glacier Media Group was sold to Black Press and quickly closed after 108, or 120 years old, depending whether you count its earliest incarnation as the Nelson Miner.
The decision affected more than 20 full time members and numerous part-time workers, including mailroom employees, drivers and carriers.
On Wednesday, February 2, 2011 after 22 years of operation the Nelson Express also ceased operations.
However, there is a few online publications popping up, including The Nelson Daily of the Lone Sheep regional on-line family and In The Koots.
The Nelson Daily is spearheaded by former NDN reporters, Bruce Fuhr and Timothy Schafer with former Trail Daily Times sales rep Peter Sheets handling the advertising sales.
