Grizzly bears return to Nelson; rash of Fairview auto break ins

Bears are back in Nelson.
On Saturday a motorist called the Nelson Police Department to report a sighting of two “sub-adult” grizzly bears on Highway 6 near the local cemetery service road.
“They appeared to be grazing by the road and not causing any issues,” said NPD Const. P. Bayes.
The next day, a hiker reported what likely were the same two bears in the same area on hiking trails.
When the man came upon them the bears responded by rearing up on their back legs.
Nelson Conservation was called and advised of both sightings.
Police encourage people to not approach any wildlife and that they can also call the R.A.P.P. line at 1-877-952-7277 to report directly to conservation any incidents involving wildlife that may become a concern.
A rash of thefts from automobiles plagued the Fairview area on the weekend.
Nelson Police reported the unlocked cars in the area were the least of the worries for some as thieves stole a scooter and one car during the late hours of Friday night.
“It is believed that all of these incidents are related,” said NPD Const. P. Bayes.
Although the NPD are still investigating and no one has been charged in the incidents, the scooter and the car were recovered by police.

On Saturday night around 11 p.m. several young males broke windows at Trafalgar School.
A neighbour heard them and called police. The youths had fled before they could be identified.
All three appeared to be in the 15 to 17-year-old range, and from five-foot-nine to six-feet-tall.
