Volunteer service won out over academic standing as the Columbia Basin Trust handed out scholarships to 43 high school graduates from the region, including three students from Nelson.

The graduates were recently presented with $2,000 scholarships at the 2011 Youth Community Service Awards toward their first year of post-secondary education or training.

Rebecca Afford, Aileen Naef and Aja Lamb-Hartley of Nelson all won scholarships, while Gabby Brasseur (Crawford Bay), Kyla Smutny (New Denver), Minna Frederick and Emily Barber (South Slocan) and Levi Huser and Rebecca Beaulieu (Salmo) also won awards.

All students graduating from a Basin high school, alternate school or other institution that grants graduation diplomas recognized by the Ministry of Education are eligible for this annual award.

In total, $86,000 was distributed to graduating students throughout the Basin in 2011. For more information on the Youth Community Service Award, visit www.cbt.org/ycsa

CBT also awarded Basin students in a second scholarship program, the College Community Service Award, which is also based on volunteer community service rather than academic standing. For more information, visit www.cbt.org/ccsa.
