The top two teams will duke it out in the championship game of the West Kootenay Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby League.

Salmo’s Babes of Brutality booked its ticket to the September 11th title game by stopping the Dam City Rollers of Castlegar 180-106 in semi final action Friday at the Rossland Arena.

The Babes of Brutality now meet regular season champ Rossland’s Gnarlies Angels in a one-game, winner-take-all-final, at the Rossland Arena.

“We are so excited to be playing the Angels again,” Laurie MacDonald told The Nelson Daily Monday.

“We have had an amazing season getting to the championship . . ..”

The Babes of Brutality started slow, but were able to switch into high gear against the most improved team in the league.

“We needed to work out a few bugs earlier on in the game (but) once we did we played a strong, smart game,” MacDonald explained.

The Babes of Brutality advanced to the semi final after finishing second in the league behind regular-season champs, Gnarlies Angels of Rossland.

Meanwhile the Dam City Rollers needed some late game heroics in the final contest the regular season to edge Nelson’s Killjoys for third spot and a place in the semi final.

“Hell yeah, Castlegar was tough,” MacDonald said when asked about the expansion squad from the Sunflower City.

“They are an awesome team. They wanted to win. They worked hard and it showed (and) ended their season on a high note.”

The West Kootenay League consists of five teams — the Salmo Babes of Brutality, Gnarlies Angels of Rossland, Dam City Rollers of Castlegar and two teams from Nelson — Killjoys and Lumberjackies.

Flat Track Roller Derby uses many of the same rules of the older banked track sport seen on television during the 60’s and 70’s.

Each heat begins with a pack of blockers lead by two pivots. The two jammers from each team, starting 10-meters behind the pack, weave their way through the pack to get to the lead to score points.

The league has played to packed arena crowds in Rossland, Castlegar and Nelson.

Tickets are available at Mountain High Lighting (Castlegar), Gerick Cycle & Sports (Trail), RossVegas (Rossland), West Kootenay Scuba (Salmo) and Phat Angel (Nelson).

Doors open at 4 p.m. with the first jam set for 5 p.m.

First game is between two expansion teams for next season — the Bloodshed Betties of Trail and Slocan’s Valley Vendettas.
