Mates dump Our Glass, Brewers blast Vikings as WKMFFL completes week two of action
The four-time defending champion Castlegar Vikings are currently looking up at the rest of the West Kootenay Men’s Flag Football League following another loss Sunday at Mount Sentinel Field.
The Steamshovel Brewers outscored the defending champs 23-6 in the second half en route to a 36-19 victory.
The loss was the second of the season for the Vikings.
In the other game Sunday, Dam Inn Mates ran its record to 2-0 with a 21-15 win over Nelson Our Glass Ogs.
The West Kootenay League is a five-team affair with Trail Thunder Cats idle Sunday.
Steamshovel pivot Steven Doyle was on fire against the Vikings, tossing five-touchdown passes – two to receiver Jon Francis.
Greg Kinnear ran a kickoff back the distance to score one of the other majors for the Brewers.
The game was tied 13-13 at the half.
In the preliminary contest, the Mates build up a 14-6 first half lead en route to the win over Our Glass primarily thanks to the great quarterbacking of Vic Hoodikoff.
Gord Clark connected with receiver Matthew Fuhr for the only touchdown of the first half for the Our Glass.
Clark ran in from five yards in the second half to bring Our Glass back to within three points of the Mates, 15-12.
Our Glass had a chance to take the lead by the Mates defence made a goal line stand to force the turnover.
The Mates then took the ball down the field for the third major of the game.
Action resumes Sunday at Mount Sentinel.
The Mates meet the Brewers in the early game while Our Glass looks to get into the win column against Trail Thundercats in the second tilt.
Castlegar has a weekend off.
