Staff and management at Whitewater Resort must have put in a call to Mother Nature prior to applying the finishing touches to the 2012 Winter Carnival weekend.

Why else would the lovely lady dump 125 plus centimeters on the hill in January to make the scenery wintry and conditions excellent.

“Whether you are wanting to race in the Gerick’s Summit Cup, sculpt out snow for money, educate yourself on backcountry safety or rock out with Adham Shaikh at the Snowball Apres Party, the Whitewater Winter Carnival is set to help you celebrate all the best things about winter,” the release on the Whitewater website said.

The weekend kicks off Saturday with the inaugural Gerick’s Summit Cup.

The race is two timed runs down a “gauntlet-style race course” featuring a series of banks and rolls, combined with mix of GS and slalom gates.

Snowboarders, skiers and telemark skiers are invited to compete.
Equipment inspection goes at 11 a.m. with the race beginning at high noon on the Red and Blue courses.

Awards are set for 3:30 p.m.

There are four categories for both male and female — 19-plus, 14-18 years, under-13 and snowboarder.

Later in the evening there is a buffet dinner along with a torchlight parade and fireworks.

There’s also music provided by Juno nominee Adham Shaiku.
Sunday is avalanche awareness day along with snow sculpture viewing and marshmallow roasting.
