Crescent Valley company wins $3.4-million contract to pave Highway 6 south of Nelson

A portion of Highway 6 near Nelson will be resurfaced this summer, improving safety for motorists on this important route through the West Kootenay.
Approximately 14 kilometres of Highway 6 will be resurfaced between Euphrates Mine and Nelson.
This will benefit local residents, as well as visitors driving the scenic International Selkirk Loop and travelling to Whitewater Ski Resort.
A $3.4-million contract has been awarded to Interoute Construction Ltd./Selkirk Paving from Crescent Valley. Work will begin this month and is scheduled to be complete by the end of September.
To make the project more environmental friendly, Selkirk Paving is proposing to use property, located at 6017 Kapak Road alongside Highway 6, is owned by Eggers Forest Products Ltd., to house the its plant.
However, the company must get approval by the Regional District of Central Kootenay board (RDCK) with a 90-day temporary use permit to remove gravel from the property, crush that gravel and create asphalt on site to be used in repaving 16 kilometres of Highway 6 from Strom Road, just outside of Nelson, to Hall Siding.
The RDCK will be hosting a public meeting at the Ymir Community Hall on Tuesday, August 14 at 6 p.m. alongside the Area G Advisory Planning Committee (APC) to hear what the community of 200 people have to say about the application.
As part of this $3.4 Million contract, a section of the Observatory Street overpass will be resurfaced, and Highway 31 will be resurfaced at the recently completed Coffee Creek wall.
Work includes shoulder repair and improvements, drainage improvements, and repairs to the road base where necessary.

In the Nelson area, work is also underway on a project to improve local area side roads. Gilroy Road, Wapple Road and Mountain Station Road are being resurfaced, with work scheduled to be complete by mid-August.
