Creston man in Kelowna hospital after altercation with RCMP
Delta Police have been called to investigate an alleged beating of a Creston man by two RCMP officers following an altercation Friday at a local drinking establishment.
CBC News is reporting that Tom Campen of Creston alleges to have been beaten by two RCMP officers called to the Kokanee Inn to deal with a report of a woman causing a disturbance.
Campen, 50, is currently at hospital in Kelowna with serious facial injuries and a broken rib and is awaiting plastic surgery.
“My upper jaw’s all wired shut,” Campen told CBC News Tuesday.
Campen said he was at the Creston pub when two Mounties tried to arrest a woman seated next to him.
Campen told CBC News when he stood up to address the officers, one of them grabbed his fingers and pushed him backward.
Campen said he did not hit the officer.
“No, I never hit him once. I had my hand on his shoulder, trying to get my other hand away from him, because he was purposely bending my fingers back,” Campen said.
He said the next thing he remembers is waking up in hospital.
Donna Meszarosi, the daughter of Campen said she was told by witnesses the officers used a flashlight or baton and fists on her father in the incident.
“I don’t know how they justify it in any way, even if he was doing something bad,” Meszarosi said.
Delta police traveled to Creston Tuesday to begin gathering evidence in the case.
