NPD warns Nelsonites of Microsoft phone scam

Nelson City Police want to warn the public of a phone scam that is raising havoc with Heritage City residents.

NPD Sergeant Janet Scott-Pryke said scammers are posing as computer security pros from Microsoft, who claims there’s a security threat to and offer to help you solve the problem. 

The caller then asks for specific information about the resident’s computer to gain remote access to under the guise of combating the threat.

The scammers appear to be targeting people in Canada, the United States, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Nelson Police are warning residents about responding to this phone scam as Microsoft imposters want to gain access to specific information requested to compromise computer security and steal identity, access bank accounts and use credit card numbers.

If anyone receives a call from someone offering to fix their computer, they are advised to contact Nelson Police and not to give any personal information over the phone to an unknown caller.
