Whitewater opens ski season with mid-season conditions

It’s a description media liaisons rarely use at the start of ski seasons.
However, this season is totally different for Whitewater Ski Mountain.
The resort, identified by Powder Magazine as “one of the best powder mountains on the continent” opened for the 2012-13 season with a 200 centimeter base — the best since the late 1990’s.
“It’s incredible . . . some a calling the base as what can be seen in January,” Whitewater’s Rebeckah Hornung said Sunday.
Hornung said the base is currently listed at 200 centimeter with more snow on the way.
Whitewater was originally scheduled to open December 1. But staff decided to delay officially opening to allow for a little more snow coverage.
The decision paid off in spades as the hill accumulated more than 100 centimeter in new snow since December 1.
The hill now is officially open with three lifts in operation — Silver King, Summit and the Hummer Handle tow.
The Whitewater website said all the terrain will be open on Silver King side (Sluice Box to Canadian Bell) and all of the Summit side (Sproulers to Joker) with the avalanche areas (Galena to Catch Basin) remaining closed.
Snow Safety staff will be working hard to open these areas, conditions permitting, over weekend.
Glory Chair and its wonderful terrain will remain closed until the area is ready to open, fingers crossed for mid-December.
Red Mountain near Rossland is also open for operations.
