Nelson City Police believe a truck fire at the north end of Stanley Street in the Uphill district in the early hours of Friday (February 22) was deliberately set.

Police came to the conclusion after fire crews extinguished the early morning blaze and have called on RCMP Forensic Identification Section and Nelson Fire Rescue assist in the investigation.

“Once the fire was fully extinguished and the scene was safe the police officers engaged and began their investigation,” said acting Sargent Brian Weber in an emailed press release.

“The officers quickly established the fire was suspicious and was likely deliberately set.”

NPD officers responded to the vehicle fire call within minutes Friday.

When police arrived they found the vehicle, parked very close to a condominium and beside a second pickup truck, fully engulfed.

Officers acted quickly and evacuated the occupants of the condominium as the smoke and potentially deadly fumes from the burning truck began billowing towards the occupants who were standing on their balcony watching the truck burn.

Shortly after the citizens were moved to safety an explosion could be heard.

Later examination revealed that one of the fenders had been peeled away from the truck by the force of a bursting tire.

Nelson Fire Rescue arrived in their front line pumper truck.

Firefighters quickly donned self-contained breathing apparatus to quickly extinguish the inferno using an amalgamation of water and foam.

The plastic components of modern vehicle can emit deadly gasses when they burn.

Portions of the truck, such as magnesium engine parts burn at very high temperatures thus the fire fighters had to pay close attention to ensure those engine parts were fully extinguished.

Once the fire fighters had extinguished the flames, they removed the vehicle battery and other possible sources of re-ignition.  The diligent fire fighters remained at the scene to ensure that the truck carcass was cool and all environmental concerns were addressed.

The Nelson Police Department is requesting help of the public to solve this arson.  The matter remains under investigation.

Late hour patrol nets marijuana, scale and large amount of cash

Police are considering charges after officers found two bags of marijuana protruding out of a backpack inside a car of a female driver early Thursday (February 21) morning.

The incident began when officers on patrol noticed a lone car parked at Lakeside Park at 3 a.m. Thursday.

The park is closed at that hour so police decided to investigate why the vehicle, idling at the time with a female driver behind the wheel, was parked at the location.

During the conversation with the occupant the officer became suspicious when answers from the driver did not make sense.

He continued the conversation and requested a second officer to attend in support. When the second officer arrived he glanced into the back seat of the car and observed two bags of marijuana protruding out of a backpack.

The marijuana was in plain view.

The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and taken into custody.

Inside the vehicle the officers located a larger bag of marijuana, a scale, and a large amount of cash.

The drugs and cash were seized as evidence.

The investigation will be completed and charges are probable.
