Grand Forks resident dies after car accident east of Greenwood

Seventy-year-old Shiela Ann Hackett of Grand Forks died in hospital yesterday after loosing control of her vehicle on an icy patch of Highway 3.
Midway RCMP and the Midway Fire Rescue were called out to the accident at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6. It happened 7.5 kilometers east of Greenwood.
Hackett had been driving westbound toward Greenwood when she lost control of her 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe while going around a sharp corner.
At the time, the road was slippery and slushy which likely contributed to the accident, said RCMP sergeant Derrick Donovan, during a telephone interview with The Boundary Sentinel.
After going around the corner, Hackett lost control and started to leave the road. She hit the right shoulder area and the Tahoe over turned once and ended up in the eastbound ditch on the opposite side of the road, said Donovan.
Hackett was transported to the Boundary Regional Hospital by ambulance, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
“This is just a reminder that winter is still with us, especially at the higher elevations, so drivers should take extra caution,” said Donovan.
The accident is still under investigation. A mechanical inspection is being done on the vehicle and an expert examined the scene. The BC Coroners Service will be examining the body but RCMP feel neither alcohol nor speed were a factor in this accident, said Donovan.
