Women's Roller Derby back on the flat track Saturday in Rossland
Some of the teams have changed, but when the West Kootenay Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby League opens the 2013 season Saturday in Rossland there no doubt will once again be plenty of action to go around.
The Rossland Arena is the site of the first doubleheader of the season when the Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers meet Salmo’s Babes of Brutality at 5 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the new and improved Rossland/Trail Roller Girls host Nelson’s KillJoys.
Doors open at 4 p.m.
“Will this be the bout that the Dam City Rollers finally take down their nemesis, the Babes of Brutality?” said Lori Clyde of the West Kootenay Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby League.
“Or will the Babes hold back the flood gates one more time?”
The West Kootenay Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby League consists of five teams this season, down a few from 2012.
Along with Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers, Salmo’s Babes of Brutality, Nelson Killjoys and the new Rossland/Trail Roller Girls is the Slocan’s Valley Vendettas.
The league plays a host of doubleheaders throughout the summer before the season concludes with the championship bout.
Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (“jams”) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team.
The teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst hindering the opposing jammer — in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.
West Kootenay Roller Derby is made up of 5 house teams and 1 Travel team; Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers, Salmo’s Babes of Brutality, Slocan’s Valley Vendettas, the Nelson Killjoys and Rossland Trail Roller Girls.
The WKWFTRDL travel team is the Kootenay Kannibelles which is made up of a stellar bunch of athletes from all the house teams who recently placed fourth in the National tournament held in March in Edmonton.
The Kannibelles will be representing the league again this year in the western finals in Fernie in July.
