Reduced hours for NDCU as staff deals with aftermath of armed robbery

Nelson and District Credit Union management said the Nelson branch will remain closed until noon Monday after an armed gunman robbed the financial institution Friday afternoon.
The Nelson and District Credit Union issued a press release late Sunday informing the public of the abbreviated hours and to thank public and local police for their quick response to the horrifying event.
“The staff of Nelson & District Credit Union (NDCU) wishes to thank our members and the community of Nelson for the outpouring of support after the armed robbery on the afternoon of Friday, April 25,” the release said.
“We also wish to thank the Nelson Police Department and the RCMP for their rapid response which resulted in the apprehension of a suspect.”
The robbery occurred at 2:14 p.m. Friday.
Following a high-speed chase on Highway 3A toward South Slocan, two suspects were later caught near the bridge in the Bonnington Dam area.
One of the suspects refused listen police requests and subsequently jumped over the bridge, landing approximately 30-40- feet below.
The suspect sustained significant injuries and, after being taken into custody, was treated in hospital.
Credit Union management has said the board will continue with its 63rd Annual General Meeting on Tuesday (April 29) at the Prestige Lakeside Resort.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Members are encouraged to attend, as the AGM is a chance to meet the Board of Directors, ask questions and hear about their Credit Union’s activities and accomplishments from the past year.
Hours for the NDCU for the next two days are:
- Monday, April 28 – Noon to 4:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, April 29 – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
NDCU management said there will be no further updates from the financial institution in order to allow law-enforcement to proceed with the investigation.
Nelson & District Credit Union was established in 1950 and has grown to over $182 million in assets and serves over 10,400 members throughout the Kootenay area with three community branches are located in Nelson, Rossland and Crawford Bay.
