INTERVIEW WITH SANTA 2014: SC takes heat from local fire officials
Santa Claus is on the hot seat, literally, after receiving some gentle criticism from local fire officials.
Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue deputy chief Dan Derby said they felt a warning was due, given an incident last year involving a singed beard, soot stains, and a not-fully-extinguished fireplace.
“We could have issued a violation ticket, but we felt a warning would suffice, under the circumstances,” he said. “I mean, it’s understandable – all those cookies would create an incredible sugar high, so you can see overlooking a detail or two.
“That being said, we DO need Claus to be a little more diligent in insuring the fire is fully out before he heads down a chimney.”
He said it’s a good reminder, this time of year when everyone is so busy, to check your smoke alarms and be particularly careful with fireplaces and candles, etc.
Castlegar fire chief Gerry Rempel concurred, saying his department, too has had to respond to some unfortunate incidents involving St. Nick, adding Claus was lucky to walk away with only a slap on the wrist.
He also said residents have a responsibility too, in keeping the big guy in red safe over the holidays.
“It’s a good time to consider chimney maintenance, and make sure your chimney is clean and without any kind of soot or creosote build-up,” he said. “And make sure your fire is completely extinguished before you go to bed.”
Claus himself responded to the charges with chagrin, promising to be more careful in his evening rounds tonight.
“As much as I love to meet firefighters around the world, the Missus would have a conniption if I came home with my eyebrows burnt off again,” he said, adding his larger concern is having to face break-and-enter charges due to regrettable misunderstandings. “We always work things out, in the end – but it wreaks havoc on my schedule and totally freaks out the reindeer.”
From the Castlegar Source/Trail Champion family to yours, wishing you a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
