Theft victims get property back but not justice ... yet
Two local victims of theft have had their property returned to them, but may have to wait a little longer for justice as police continue to investigate.
Trail Top Cop RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said two suspects have been identified in the thefts, but police could not proceed with charges due to insufficient evidence at the time of the offences.
But there remains cause for optimism.
“As police, we know that if we keep pursuing suspects, eventually they end up in the system,” he said. “This is why we encourage public reporting, because it increases the chance of police catching and arresting them, and ultimately recommending that Crown lay charges.”
Furthermore, he said residents are really stepping up and doing their part by securing valuables and reporting suspicious activity.
“Those (see below) were the only two theft calls we had over the weekend,” he added. “This is the second weekend in a row during which the reports of theft have dropped from usually about 10 down to only two.”
The two specific events to which Wicentowich is referring are as follows:
On Aug. 30, the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP recovered a tool box and tools stolen from a carport in the 900 block of Milligan Avenue, in Trail. The stolen items were returned it to the owner. A suspect was identified and will be monitored, according to Trail top cop RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
Then on Sept. 1, the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP recovered a black backpack stolen from a shed in the 1100 block of Birch Avenue, in Trail, and returned it to the owner.
Other items recovered included aviation snips, wire cutters, and a pop riveter. If those are yours, please claim them at the Trail RCMP detachment at 3601 Laburnum Drive or call them at 250-364-2566.
