Elderly Trail couple woken by intruder
An elderly Trail couple got a nasty wake-up call at roughly 9 a.m. when an intruder entered their home, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
“On Nov. 17, the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP responded to a complaint of a break, enter, and theft at a residence located in the 2000 block of Topping Street, in West Trail,” he said. “An unknown suspect ‘jiggled’ open a basement door in the residence and stole a small amount of money, fishing rods, a tackle box, 8-track cassettes, camping gear, rifle bolts, and a Bushnell range finder.”
“The 75-year-old-female and 74-year-old male victims were at home sleeping at the time and were awoken by the basement door slamming as the suspect fled. The suspect may have been driving a red truck. Nelson RCMP Forensic Identification Section will be forensically examining the scene.
“The RCMP advised for home owners to ensure all of their doors and windows are locked and secured. Deadbolts locks are the best locks to use to secure your door. Please report all suspicious activity in and around your home to the RCMP.”
No one was injured during the incident.
“It’s a very unusual incident given the time and circumstance, but we don’t believe there is any danger to the public, as the intruder fled right away,” he said. “We think the primary motivation in this was theft, not any harm against the homeowner.”
“It’s still very concerning that this occurred, and if there are any witnesses, we encourage them to contact us immediately.”
