A Kelowna man is in police custody facing charges stemming from a car theft and subsequent flight from authorities, according to Trail RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“Trail and Greater District and Salmo RCMP joined forces to investigate and arrest a 33-year-old Kelowna man for allegedly possessing a stolen vehicle and fleeing from police in Salmo and Trail.”

Wicentowich said that on May 3, at 8:43 p.m., a Trail woman reported her blue 2016 BMW had been stolen from the 1700 block of 2nd Avenue in Trail.

“On May 4, 2022, a witness reported that the blue BMW was parked near the library in Salmo, BC. An officer from the Salmo RCMP attempted to detain a suspect, however he allegedly fled from the area in the BMW.

“Trail RCMP located the BMW back in the Trail area and discovered the suspect walking down the street in the Glenmerry community. Officers placed the 33-year-old man from Kelowna under arrest and into custody. The man was found to be in possession of the keys to the stolen vehicle. Police recovered the BMW a short distance away.”

Wicentowich said BC Prosecution Service has laid the following criminal charges against Michael Shimaro-Campbell (33):

  • Possession of Stolen Property over $5000 contrary to Section 355(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance contrary to Section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Flight while pursued by Peace Officer contrary to Section 320.17 of the Criminal Code

Michael Shimaro-Campbell remains in custody.
