A Vancouver Island RCMP officer is coming home with a suitcase a little heavier after winning the gold medal in Cross Country Mountain Bike in the scope of the 2023 World Police & Fire Games which was held in Winnipeg.

Forty-two-year-old Sgt. David Vunic, who is currently posted at the West Shore RCMP, has been an avid cyclist since he was a child. He shares his passion with his two children and played a key role in creating a Bike Patrol Unit at the West Shore RCMP detachment in 2018, which proved to be a great success.

Vunic is a two-times provincial champion in Cross Country Mountain Biking and Red Bull Divide and Concur champion.

His most recent win at the World Police & Fire Games comes right after his participation at the BC Bike Race, an international event which spanned over seven days across British Columbia. David ranked 27th amongst 600 riders from all over the world.
