Ski Film Fundraiser Supports Local Youth Athletes, Celebrates Upcoming Ski Season
Buckle up for a cinematic ride like no other as Team GIVE’R proudly presents an awe-inspiring ski film that dives deep into the heart, soul, and mind of a skier. The community is invited to The Bailey Theatre in Trail on Nov. 3 for Calm Beneath Castles, a new Matchstick Productions film that celebrates the essence of finding solace in nature and becoming one with the mountains. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the event starts at 5:30 p.m.
This film fundraiser kicks off Team GIVE’R Freeride Club’s season, and aims to inspire excitement in the local ski community.
“We’re trading powdery slopes for cozy theatre seats as we bring you Calm Beneath Castles, a heart-pounding documentary that will ignite your passion and leave you dreaming of your next adventure on the slopes,” says Ryan Lachapelle, Team GIVE’R club director. “And the best part? It’s all for a fantastic cause!”
Now in its second year, the Team GIVE’R Freeride Club is a non-profit youth competitive freeski team training out of RED Mountain. The club supports young athletes eager to develop their skills in a supportive and empowering environment, fostering the next generation of skiers.
“We’ve got over 35 young, enthusiastic athletes excited to be part of a team that encourages them to grow both as skiers and as individuals,” says Lachapelle. “Last season, it was amazing to watch our local youth reach the podium, but, more importantly, to adopt the GIVE’R mentality and way of life—giving back and giving it all you’ve got while having fun with friends.”
Lachapelle founded Team GIVE’R with his late best friend, Kenneth McAlpine, during their time on The Amazing Race Canada. The Team GIVE’R Foundation was created in 2020 after McAlpine passed away to honour his legacy.
“We’re keeping the spirit alive in Kenneth’s name,” says Lachapelle. “The ski team is the ultimate way to continue that legacy and share my biggest passion—skiing—with our youth.”
Calm Beneath Castles follows the world’s best skiers to breathtaking locations, capturing their talent, instincts, and passion as they take on the mountain. The film showcases their extraordinary skill, courage, and determination while highlighting their connection with nature and the tranquility found beneath towering castles of snow. Through stunning cinematography and compelling storytelling, it inspires viewers with its portrayal of skiers’ relentless pursuit of their goals and their harmonious relationship with the mountains.
Sponsored by Realtor Kristel Tymchen of Re/Max All Pro Realty, Re/Max All Pro Realty, Lysenko Law, and private donors Rachel and Ed Barth, the night promises an opportunity to gather and celebrate skiing before the snow officially falls.
The feature film will be preceded by a series of independent short films, raffle prizes, and a silent auction. Come for the movie and stay for dinner, with pizza and beverages available for purchase during intermission at the licensed event.
Funds raised will directly support aspiring local youth athletes on their journey to becoming the next legends in the freeride world by covering coaching expenses for out-of-town competitions throughout the winter.
With deep roots in the sport’s culture, Rossland and RED Mountain have long served as the birthplace of freeride, says Lachapelle, who couldn’t be more pumped for the season ahead.
“RED was one of the first Canadian resorts to host a freeride event, and we’re proud to continue that tradition,” he adds. “With 3,800 acres of world-class terrain and an incredible coaching staff, our athletes have everything they need to take their skiing to the next level. Team GIVE’R lives on!”
