Exactly one year from the day Firefighters Without Borders drove south with the fire engine Castlegar donated, Engine #3 was put to excellent use, according to Castlegar Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio.

“I was contacted late last night by Fire Chief Roque Pineda of the San Pedro Pochutla Fire Department in southern Mexico,” Lattanzio said. “They had a structure fire in Pochutla.

” … You may recall, the City of Castlegar Fire Department donated our timed out (30+ year old) fire Engine #3 to Fire Fighters Without Borders Canada last year and ultimately it was given by FWBC to San Pedro Pochutla in southern Mexico.”

Lattanzio said Engine #3 was put to the test in its new home (click here for local coverage and photos of the fire).

“The gear that some of the local Bomberos are wearing also came from CFD as well as Mercer Celgar,” he added. “It is very gratifying to see something we were able to donate being used in that part of the world, where they wouldn’t otherwise have access to this kind of equipment.”
