The Skills Centre is organizing the first in-person Coldest Night of the Year walk for Trail and surrounding communities, and it’s a big deal bringing people together for this timely fundraiser. For the past two years, community members and organizations had to run their CNOY events virtually because of the pandemic.
“We’re looking for a big turnout. There’s walking a scenic route, food, socializing, what’s not to like? And the fundraising helps people experiencing homelessness, which everyone in Trail is well aware is a concern in our community. Coldest Night of the Year is such a good way to engage people positively in helping create solutions that can have immediate benefit,” says Emily Gora, team captain for the host organization.
The fundraiser gets people out of doors and walking either a 2 km or 5 km route to raise money for local poverty reduction initiatives. The event starts and ends at the Skills Centre’s offices in the Fortis building in downtown Trail. Things get underway at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.
“We work with several community organizations to support those living in poverty. We will use the funds raised at Coldest Night of the Year to continue our poverty reduction work and donate a portion to other poverty reduction initiatives in the community,” Gora says.
“So sign up to walk, donate, or volunteer, and join us for the first CNOY event in person in Trail, and let’s hit our fundraising goal of $20,000!”
The Skills Centre has a long history of providing innovative and transformative community programming especially in support of youth, women, immigrants, newcomers and people living with low income. It also provides regional poverty reduction programming in partnership with five local municipalities.
The Skills Centre’s poverty reduction work includes operating Community Kitchens, running the affordable housing directory, ending working poverty, and offering bursaries to women and graduating high school students living with low income.
