The Kootenay Gallery of Art is pleased to present two new art exhibitions that will make a huge impression. Both of these exhibitions explore scale and both have the act of drawing as the base of the work, with quite different results.

Toronto artist Amanda McCavour will be in Castlegar from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8 to create her unique fibre art pieces for an exhibition entitled Consumed by Clouds. It consists of two different pieces. The first work Neon Clouds is dense collection of sewn lines suspended in the gallery ceiling and will be arranged to look like floating clouds of colour. You are invited to walk around the clouds through the open paths and lay underneath the pieces to see how they move and sway with the movement of air in the room.

Sample Wall is the second, smaller work that features tests, samples and sketches from the past 10 years of McCavour working in her studio. McCavour tests and does sketches with thread and keeps these as a record of her processes. You can see repeated motifs that, when installed, start to look like wallpaper.

Along with McCavour, Castlegar’s own George Koochin is featured in the West Gallery. Koochin is an artist of considerable talent, having studied Monumental Art in St Petersburg, Russia. For this exhibition, Koochin has composed a Kootenay love poem, a visual meditation on “why there is life”.

The two exhibitions open on Sept. 6 and run until Nov. 2. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening on the evening of Sept. 6 beginning at 7 pm. Both artists will be in attendance. The opening event is free of charge. Admission to the exhibitions during regular opening hours is by donation.

For those of you interested in learning more about Amanda McCavour’s working process, there will be a drop in/demo on Wednesday, Sept.4 from 2 to 4 p.m.  Amanda McCavour is also facilitating a fibre art workshop entitled Embroidered Specimens on Saturday, September 7 from 10 am to 4 pm.

The Kootenay Gallery of Art is located at 120 Heritage Way, Castlegar. It is across from the airport, down the road from the Apple Guy. Regular hours are from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday to Saturday. Call Maggie or Val at 250 365 3337, email kootenaygaller@telus.net or check out www.kootenaygallery.com for more information about the exhibtions and workshop.
