Ryan Ricker is currently competing for the title of Mr. Health and Fitness 2021.The contest opened and public voting began in Mid-June with an estimated 25,600 entrants. Now only the top one percent remains. The winner will be featured in Muscle and Fitness magazine and take home $20,000 USD. Ryan pledges all the money to support mental health and well-being. Public voting will determine the winner of the competition on August 5th, 2021.

Raised in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Ryan was a paramedic for 15 years, a volunteer firefighter for 10, and spent several years with Search and Rescue. In that time he had encountered many people in their worst moments. “It feels good to be there for others, but it can take a toll on you. I needed to start taking care of my health first, so I made the gym my second home.” Ryan dedicated himself to a lifestyle incorporating regular gym time. It is his nature to help others so during his personal time at the community gym, he did not hesitate to assist others with their fitness goals.

“I needed to make a lifestyle change. I felt I could escape the drowning anxieties of life and focus on my mental health by shifting the mindset towards fitness.” When the pandemic shut down access to public spaces, Ryan had to create a makeshift gym in his unfinished garage. Frost crystals on the concrete walls in winter, and the heat of summer did not deter his focus. “Although physical health and mental health go hand in hand, not all issues can be solved in the gym.”

What will he do if he wins? “At first I thought I would upgrade my gym; however, I want to give back to all the supporters.” He realized that a personal gym was not the ultimate goal, but rather the experience and education he would gain from this opportunity that was most important. Ryan feels the money would be better spent on supporting others with their mental health and well-being.
