On Jan. 23 at 11:01 p.m., Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report that a 38-year-old Trail man allegedly tried to light a 22-year-old Trail woman on fire in the 1400 block of Bay Avenue.

“The man attempted to burn the woman by igniting hairspray with a lighter and spraying the woman with the jet of flame,” said Trail RCMP top cop Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “The woman ran away from the man and was singed (hair/clothing) in the attempt. The woman later reported the incident to a frontline Trail RCMP officer during the course of another matter.”

Wicentowich said the attack was targeted and the two people know each other, as both are involved in the downtown street culture.

“The 38-year-old Trail man was located and arrested by the officer and later released, and Trail RCMP is recommending Crown Counsel pursue one count of Assault with a Weapon contrary to Section 267 of the Criminal Code against the 38-year-old Trail man.”

Wicentowich underscored how very dangerous this attack was, not only for the intended victim, but also for the attacker himself, who could easily have ended up holding an explosion in the palm of his hand.

“It was incredibly reckless and dangerous.”
