Search continues; RCMP ask the public to quash rumour mill

Police are asking residents to handle rumours responsibly as Day Four of the search for 19-year-old Zachary Larsen continues.

Helicopters and numerous Search and Rescue water craft searched again yesterday, but found nothing, so a ground search was organized for today, beginning this morning in Millennium Park.

Roughly 100 volunteers showed up to help look for the young man, splitting into teams of eight, with each team led by a trained Search and Rescue person.

LETTER: We cannot let this issue die

Dear editor,

Death is not an option.  It is an experience each of us will face one day.  How we, or our loved ones, are cared for during that experience has taken a significant turn for the worse as local administrators once again reduce service levels while trying to convince us that adequate care is still available. Nurses and physicians in both hospital and home care settings will continue to give care to the dying as they can while caring for many other clients at the same time, but they will have to do that without support from a hospice palliative care coordinator.

Castlegar residents gearing up for dancin' in the streets

More than 400 people attended last year's city street dance, held in conjunction with Sunfest - and this year should see an even better turn-out.

City councillor Kevin Chernoff has helped organize this year's event, and he said there's some new innovations and fun additions to make sure everyone has a terrific time.

"The street behind City Hall will be closed off, just like last year, and the dance will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the Friday night of Sunfest (June 4)," he said.

ATAMANENKO: Pension reform and retirement security--two visions

In March, the government released a discussion paper intended as background for its Canada-wide public consultation on pension reform and Canada’s Retirement Income System.  If you haven’t heard about it, it’s not surprising. It involved only three town-hall meetings, three by-invitation expert roundtables, and a voluntary on-line component.  You could also write in.
