A wildfire near the Trail hospital has drawn crews from the KBRFR as well as BC Wildfire Services, as well as prompting the activation of the Emergency Operations Centre as of about 5:20 p.m.

BC Wildifre Services information officer Justine Hunse says the fire is believed to be lightning-caused, and is roughly 0.8 hectares in size. As of 5:49 p.m., BCWS had 35 personnel en route, including an initial attack crew, a unit crew, an officer, two helicopters and an air tanker group.

Hunse had good news to offer in the scenario.

“Though this is an interface fire, it is slope-driven and is moving uphill, away from town,” she said, adding it does not appear to be threatening any structures.

Information officer for the RDKB, Frances Maika, concurred.

“It’s 300 to 400 metres from any structures,” she said, adding the EOC is activated to Level Two, meaning there’s a large contingent of staff and crews deployed.

“They are taking aggressive action,” she said.

She added that the hospital is doing initial preparations for emergency response given the proximity of the fire, as a precautionary measure.
