Substance-related calls on the rise, one call leads to 'fowl play'
Alcohol and substance-related calls aare expected to increase over the summer, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
“Over the course of the weekend (May 28 to May 31), the Trail and Greater District Detachment were kept busy when responding to numerous calls for service which included:
- Intoxication by drugs/alcohol;
- Mischiefs (damage to property);
- Suspicious persons, vehicles or occurrences;
- Causing disturbances or noise complaints;
- Mental Health Act, or calls to check someone’s well-being;
- Harassing communications;
- Breach of peace;
- Civil landlord tenant disputes.”
As an example, Wicentowich described an event in which ‘fowl play’ was a factor:
“On May 29 at 5:55 a.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated male located in the parking lot of the Waneta Mall,” he said. “The male, who was believed to be intoxicated by a drug, was acting strangely when the police arrived on scene. The man had a difficult time articulating why he had called the RCMP, then proceeded to have an unrelated conversation with a crow at the scene. RCMP was able to contact a family member who could care for the man until sober. He was safely transported to the responsible family member.
“Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP expect a higher number of these types of incidents which typically involved alcohol and illicit drug consumption over the course of the summer and has been responding to an increased number of incidents in the downtown Trail area. The Trail RCMP ask the public to continue to report activity to the Trail and Greater District Detachment at 250-364-2566.”
