The hitchhikers' guide to awareness and other assorted police encounters

A “suspicious” male hitchhiking on Highway 3A Saturday evening bolted as soon as police saw him, jettisoning a clear medication bottle in his wake as he ran.
However, he was caught by Nelson Police officers after a brief chase off of Government Road. The bottle was believed to contain cocaine, said NPD Sgt. Jarrett Slomba.
The man was identified as a 23-year-old Winlaw resident and was known to police.
He was served a violation ticket (for hitchhiking) but was arrested for obstructing a police officer, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property.
Never wake a sleeping bear
Yogi and his pals are officially awake.
On Friday morning a black bear was sighted in the Gyro Park and Douglas Road area in Nelson.
Nelson conservation officers were notified of the bear’s presence but they did not find the bear. There were no further reported incidences involving the bear.
“Nelson Police remind residents to exercise diligence in removing bear attractants from their property, as well as increasing their awareness of the return of bear presence after a rather lengthy winter season,” said Sgt. Slomba.
Not flying under the radar
A group of individuals gathering near Ward and Baker streets caught the attention of NPD officers Friday evening.
Upon investigation, officers found they were consuming alcohol in a public place. A 23-year-old Kelowna man was issued a violation ticket under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act for consuming liquor in a public place.
The man was also arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). The man was later released from NPD cells when he was sober.
NPD members responded to over 35 calls for service from April 15-17, including:
• A 25-year-old man from Bonnington was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition — and a 30-day vehicle impoundment — after police pulled him over on Vernon Street and he failed the roadside screening.
• A 55-year-old Silverton man was arrested after he was reported causing a nuisance and “in a gross state of intoxication.” He was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and, in the process, threatened NPD officers. The man spent the night in NPD cells until he was sober. There were no charges laid in relation to this incident.
