A 32-year-old woman escaped potentially life-threatening injuries when she was hit in a crosswalk late Friday afternoon at the corner of Victoria and Josephine streets in Nelson.

Police received a 9-1-1 call from a witness at approximately 5:30 p.m. of a pedestrian being hit by a small pick-up truck near the Nelson downtown.

Upon arrival Nelson Police Department officers found that a female pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk and dragged approximately 15-feet by the vehicle.

The driver, a 32-year-old male, stopped on Victoria Street before proceeding into the crosswalk where he hit the women.

Nelson Police, Fire Department and members of BC Ambulance responded to the call.

The woman was transported to Kootenay Lake hospital and admitted for injuries to head and pelvis.

Police report the injuries are serious but non-life threatening.

Nelson Police are investigating the cause of the collision, however, drugs and alcohol have already been ruled out.

At this time of the year police would like to remind all drivers to be extra cautious on roads and streets — with temperatures fluctuating roads can become slippery very fast.

Pedestrians are encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing when out in the early mornings or evenings.

Drivers should slow down and take an extra moment to look at crosswalks when driving in high pedestrian areas.
