A 72-year-old woman was one of three people arrested after a drug raid on a Columbia Avenue house yesterday, according to Castlegar RCMP Cpl. Deb Postnikoff.

“On Jan. 23, members of the Castlegar Detachment executed a search warrant at the 1600 block of Columbia Avenue,” she said, adding the search was the result of a six-month investigation. “A 72-year-old Castlegar woman, a 49-year-old Castlegar man and a 43-year-old Grand Forks man were arrested and are facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.”

She said this was not a mother/son situation – none of the suspects are related – but police were unsurprised at the female’s age, as she was already known to police.

“A substantial amount of a substance believed to be cocaine was seized as well as currency and drug paraphernalia.”

She said it was enough Canadian currency to imply something other than personal use, thus substantiating the trafficking allegation.

“The female has been remanded in custody for court later today in Castlegar, and the two males were released on conditions and have been provided a first appearance court date of Feb. 14 in Castlegar court.

“This isn’t going to be the last of the drug files – we’ll be actively pursuing more drug investigations in the near future,” Postnikoff added.
