Suspicious fire at Hummingbird Bridge

UPDATE: Bridge fire considered arson, police investigating
Grand Forks RCMP are looking for the person or persons responsible for lighting the Hummingbird Bridge on fire after they found two jerry cans of gasoline set against the frame of the bridge on Saturday, Feb. 16.
The bridge fire is one of four recent arson cases the Grand Forks RCMP have been investigating over the past month, said Grand Forks RCMP staff sergeant Jim Harrison.
“This is the fourth fire believed to be arson in the North Fork area and that is really concerning us,” said Harrison, adding they have no idea what the motive would be.
The other three fires occured on private properties in the same area of North Fork Road and involved out buildings. No one has been hurt in this new wave of criminal activity.
Police have idenitified a vehicle and person of interest already, said Harrison.
“If anybody in that area has seen anything that they think is suspicious please call us,” said Harrison.
Due to the speedy response by the Grand Forks Fire Rescue Department, the bridge was structurally unscathed. It was inspected by EMCON and deemed safe to drive over, so traffic patterns will continue as usual, said Harrison.

A suspicious bridge fire was the reason that Fire / Rescue, RCMP and Ministry of Highways personnel were called out to the Hummingbird Bridge just after 9PM Saturday Feb. 16, 2013.
The fire was labeled suspicious because two gasoline jerry cans were found on the scene below the bridge. The quick response time meant that there was very little actual damage to the structure and it is not likely to be closed to traffic. Without further information from the police and fire services at this time we can only speculate as to whether this was a case of arson.
