Prolific gas thieves frustrate police/residents
A rash of gas thefts throughout town have residents frustrated and police asking the public to keep a sharp eye out for suspicious behaviour.
Castlegar top cop Sgt. Laurel Mathew said there have been seven calls since Monday (one of which was regarding a weekend incident) from residents who have had gas siphoned from their vehicles – mostly cars/trucks, but even one rototiller was, “sucked dry”.
There was also an eighth call where the vehicle owner, who owns a newer model with a locking gas-tank lid, found evidence that someone had attempted, but failed, to break into his tank.
The eight incidences have happened across the entire city, from Blueberry to the downtown core.
“It may not seem like a huge deal – but it is,” Mathew said. “This is very frustrating for citizens who pay big bucks for their gas.”
Police are asking residents to be alert and watchful, and to report any suspicious individuals or behaviour, by calling the detachment at 250-365-7721.
